Teachers and students across middle schools in the district are engaged in standards-based instruction. The standards-based instruction and scoring system reports what students know and are able to do on grade-level standards. Learning is a progression and as the student’s understanding increases, so do scores, which reflect the new learning. Likewise, as rigor and complexity increase over the year, a student’s learning and scores may change.
Students have multiple opportunities throughout the school year to show evidence toward learning. The purpose of semester 1 grades is to communicate a student’s progress toward learning standards at the middle of the school year. Students have not yet had a full year to demonstrate understanding of the standards. Honor Roll for 1st semester is based on the following criteria: 4.0-3.5 Honor Roll and 3.49-3.0 Honor Roll. At the end of the school year, students will be evaluated on end-of-year expectations. The end-of-year cumulative GPA will be used to determine Honor Roll based on the following criteria: 4.0 Honor Roll, 3.9-3.5 Honor Roll and 3.49-3.0 Honor Roll. Watch for Honor Roll lists for 1st semester in the Reporter Herald and/or Berthoud Surveyor.
